TPD PepperBalls
03/16/2018 – A Tulsa driver is in jail after leading police on a chase early Friday morning.
At one point, officers had to break out a window and fire pepper balls at the man to get him into custody.
Police arrested Tyrone Powell and this wasn’t his first run-in with police.
The chase started around 2 a.m. when police saw a Chevy Impala with expired tags near 51st and Peoria.
When officers tried to pull the car over, they said the driver wouldn’t stop.
Police said Powell drove all the way to Harvard and then back and forth from 31st to 51st only driving about 50 miles an hour.
Officers used stop sticks to pop the tires.
Eventually, the car stopped at 51st and Delaware, near the suspect’s home.
Officers said they had to fire pepperballs and then taze Powell to get him out of the car and into custody.
Police arrested him on 6 complaints including DUI and eluding.
Court records show Powell had two previous warrants for resisting and obstructing a police officer.
One neighbor told News On 6 that she has lived in his neighborhood for five years and said crime like this doesn’t happen there.
“He’s just a neighborly guy. I mean, I know he has a kid. He’s just a nice guy in my opinion. He’s never given me any problems so I was really shocked to see him on the news this morning,” she said.
Police said they used bean bag launchers to break out the back window of Powell’s car.
Powell’s arrest report said he was hit by one of the bean bags.
He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be just fine.
